THE HISTORY OF THE STUSSY BRAND

From the first decorated surfboards to collaborations with major brands...

THE BIRTH

The Stussy story begins in Laguna Beach, California, in the early 1980s as a surf brand. This was the passion of Shawn Stussy, its founder, born in 1954 and immersed in the California surfer culture of the 1950s . Initial production consisted primarily of surfboards, on which Stussy engraved only his name.

WHEN DID STUSSY BECOME FAMOUS?

In 1984, Shawn Stussy contacted Frank Sinatra Jr. to create a clothing line. The inspiration came from the world of surfing and skateboarding , from the style of young people belonging to those subcultures and, in particular, from the white painter's hats they used to wear. This was, in fact , Stussy's first iconic piece , revisited with the caption "Stussy No. 4". From that moment on, Stussy's climb to the Olympus of what was increasingly becoming known as "streetwear" began. In 1991, Shawn Stussy decided to open his first store in New York City , on Prince Street.
